Just a short drive away is Slea Head the most western point in Ireland, where whales, basking sharks and sunfish may sometimes be seen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The area is rich in history.   Just behind the B&amp;B are the ruins of Ferriter\u2019s Castle, where the poet and soldier Piaras Feirit\u00e9ar (or Pierce Ferriter) was born. He was one of the last Irish Chieftains to be defeated by the Oliver Cromwell\u2019s forces. He was hanged in Killarney in 1652 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferriterfamily.com\/heritage\/pierce_ferriter_our_great_patron\/\">Pierce Ferriter \u2013 our great patron<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ferriter.blogspot.ie\/2009\/12\/treasure-of-fortune.html\">Treasure of Fortune<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.eircom.net\/~mickmongey\/FerritersCove.html\" target=\"_blank\">oldest settlement in Kerry<\/a> was recently excavated on the shores of Ferriter\u2019s Cove and was dated to around 4,000 B.C. The area boasts the greatest concentration of archaeological sites in Ireland, with a number of important monastic settlements, including Reask, Gallarus and Kilmalkedar.  One of the most famous saints from the area was St. Brendan the Navigator, who legend says discovered America.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ferriterscove.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/coastguard-station.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"coastguard-station\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-281\" loading=\"lazy\">Overlooking Ferriter\u2019s Cove are the ruins of a Coastguard Tower on top of Ceann Sib\u00e9al (Sybil Head). Constructed to protect against invasion, it was one of many famine relief projects to help the poor earn money to buy food. The Coastguard Station on the top of Ceann Sib\u00e9al was 40 feet high and 30 feet square. From the Coastguard Station, the sister towers on the Great Blasket and Ballydavid Head can be seen. Care needs to be taken at the top as there is a sheer cliff of nearly 700 feet. Permission to pass through the fields to visit the Tower may be required from the landowners.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ferriterscove.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/pint.jpg?resize=300%2C399\" alt=\"pint\" width=\"300\" height=\"399\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-265\" loading=\"lazy\">Ferriter\u2019s Cove is in a Gaeltacht region \u2013 where the Irish language is in daily use. The beautiful Blasket Islands, which was a cradle for many famous Irish writers, such as Peig Sayers, Tom\u00e1s \u00d3 Criomhthain and Muiris \u00d3 S\u00failleabh\u00e1in, are just a short distance away and can be easily reached by ferry from nearby Dunquin. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The rich culture attracts musicians from far and wide \u2014 so you can enjoy the very best of jig, reel, and hornpipe, while quaffing a glass of the \u201cblack stuff\u201d Sl\u00e1inte !!! Your Health!!!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr noshade size=\"1\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n\u00a0<br>\n<b>BALLYFERRITER<\/b><br>\n\u00a0<br>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ferriterscove.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ceolf.jpg?resize=143%2C220\" alt=\"ceolf\" width=\"143\" height=\"220\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>Two miles away is the village of Ballyferriter, one of the most popular destinations for Irish language summer-school students. <\/p>\n<p>The village museum, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corca-dhuibhne.com\/museum.html\"> M\u00fasaem Chorca Dhuibnhe<\/a>, provides information on the history, archaeology and geology of the area.<\/p>\n<p>The three pubs in the village, Tigh U\u00ed Mhurch\u00fa (Murphy\u2019s Pub), Tigh an tSaorsaigh (Sayers Pub), Tigh U\u00ed Chath\u00e1in (Kane\u2019s Pub) and the hotel Ost\u00e1n Ceann Sib\u00e9 al have regular traditional music sessions and serve food during the tourist season.<br>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ferriterscove.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/francaigh.jpg?resize=400%2C300\" alt=\"Na Francaigh\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23\" loading=\"lazy\"><br>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<\/p><hr noshade size=\"1\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n\u00a0<br>\n<b>CLOGHER HEAD<\/b><\/p>\n<table align=\"right\" cellpadding=\"20\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"#ffffff\">\n<td><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius:15px;-moz-box-shadow: 3px 3px 4px #808080; -webkit-box-shadow: 3px 3px 4px #808080; box-shadow: 5px 5px 5px #808080;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ZvErH3e61Q?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/td>\n<\/table>\n<p>A couple of miles south is Clogher Head which offers wonderful views of the Blaskets, Ceann Sib\u00e9al and the Three Sisters. Beneath the headland is the beautiful Clogher Beach, however the beach is unsafe for bathing. Just up the road from Clogher Beach is the world famous Louis Mulcahy Pottery Shop \u2013 \u201cPotad\u00f3ireacht na Caol\u00f3ige\u201d. Another pottery shop on the same road is \u201cFaoile\u00e1n Pottery\u201d where the visitor can paint their own pottery.
